Context: Recently, a Himalayan butterfly named Golden Birdwing has set a record of India’s largest butterfly after 88 years.
About Golden Birdwing
- It is a large tropical butterfly belonging to the swallowtail family, Papilionidae.
- Its scientific name is ‘Troides aeacus’ with a wingspan of 194 mm, the female of the species is marginally larger than the Southern Birdwing (190 mm).
- It is found in northern India, Nepal, Burma, China, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Taiwan, Cambodia, peninsular Malaysia and Indonesia.
- The female Golden Birdwing was recorded from Didihat in Uttarakhandand the largest male was from the Wankhar Butterfly Museum in Meghalaya capital Shillong.
