Sri Lankan author wins Booker prize

  • Sri Lankan author Shehan Karunatilaka has won the 2022 Booker Prize for his second novel The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida, described by the judges as a whodunnit and a race against time.

 

PM Modi to attend Deepotsav in Ayodhya on Deepavali eve

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Ayodhya on Sunday during the Deepotsav celebrations, a day before Diwali festival.
  • He is expected to offer puja at the Ram temple and will visit the Sri Ram Janmabhoomi Tirtha Kshetra site.

 

MSP for wheat hiked to ₹2,125 per quintal for this year

  • 110 In ₹, the amount by which the government increased the minimum support price (MSP) for wheat to ₹2,125 per quintal on Tuesday.
  • The MSP for mustard was raised by ₹400 to ₹5,450 per quintal for the current crop year to boost the production and income of farmers.
  • MSP is the rate at which the government buys grain from farmers.

 

Centre increases minimum support price for rabi crops

  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs announced an increase of 2% to 9% in the Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for six mandated rabi crops for this season.
  • The sowing of the six crops has started.
  • Farmers’ organisations, which have been alleging that the Centre is delaying the announcement of the MSP, said, by keeping the MSP of wheat low and announcing a paltry hike, the Centre is helping big corporate houses in the sector to make quick money.
  • They said farmers will be forced to sell their produce to private traders like last year as the MSP is low. For wheat, the MSP is ₹2,125 for a quintal. Last year, the price was ₹2,015 and the increase this year ₹110.
