Congress is all set to witness a contest between party veteran Mallikarjun Kharge and Shashi Tharoor

  • For first time in 24 years, no member of the Gandhi family is a candidate for the top post; voting to be held in all State unit headquarters, special provisions made for Bharat Jodo Yatra delegates
  • The Congress is all set to witness a contest between party veteran Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha member Shashi Tharoor in the party’s presidential polls on Monday..
  • For the first time in 24 years, no member of the Gandhi family is a candidate for the party’s top post.
  • The last contest that the party witnessed was in November 2000, when Sonia Gandhi had defeated her rival Jitendra Prasada by a huge margin.
  • In 1997, a triangular contest between Sitaram Kesri, Sharad Pawar and Rajesh Pilot saw Kesri’s victory.
  • While voting will be held at all State unit headquarters, a polling booth has been set up at the party headquarters for Congress Working Committee members and special arrangements made for the delegates who are part of the Bharat Jodo Yatra. Voting will start from 10 a.m. and end by 4 p.m.

 

Foreign investors withdraw from Indian equity markets

  • 7500 crore, the Amount withdrawn by foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) from the Indian equity markets in the first two weeks of October on concerns of monetary policy tightening by the U.S. Federal Reserve and other central banks. With this, the total FPI outflow this year has reached ₹1.76 lakh crore so far

 

New digital banking units inaugurated across India

  • 75 Digital Banking Units (DBUs), inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi including two of the Jammu and Kashmir Bank.
  • In the Union Budget 202223, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had announced the setting up of DBUs to commemorate 75 years of independence.
  • Eleven banks in the public sector and 12 in the private sector are participating

 

Amit Shah launched MBBS textbooks in Hindi

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday launched MBBS textbooks in Hindi,
  • Making Madhya Pradesh the first State in the country to offer medical education in the language.
  • Shah called the initiative a moment of “renaissance and reconstruction” for the education sector in India.

 

Russia joins race to supply light battle tanks to Indian Army

  • Russia will field its SprutSDM1 light amphibious tank for the Indian Army’s upcoming tender for light tanks and has submitted technical details of the same, according to an official from Rosoboronexport.
  • “In response to India’s request, we have submitted our technical proposals. We are ready to hold consultations and show the tank to the Indian side,” a Rosoboronexport official said ahead of the DefExpo to be held from October 18 to 22 in Gandhinagar.
