British PM Liz Truss announces exit; U.K. to get its 3rd PM in three months

  • Britain is about to get its third Prime Minister in three months, with Prime Minister Liz Truss, who faced growing pressure from Conservative MPs, announcing that she will quit the post. Ms. Truss’s budgetary plans, at the heart of which were unfunded tax cuts, had deeply rattled markets and led to the replacement of the Chancellor only days ago.
  • “I recognise though given this situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party,” she said, adding that she had spoken to King Charles III and informed him of her intent to resign as leader of the party.

Competition Commission of India (CCI) imposed  a  ₹1,337.76 crore penalty on Google

  • The Competition Commission of India (CCI) imposed a ₹1,337.76 crore penalty on Google for “abusing its dominant position in multiple markets in the Android mobile device ecosystem.
  • Issuing a “cease and desist” order, the CCI also directed Google to modify its conduct within a timeline.
  • It added that original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) should not be forced to preinstall a bouquet of applications. The matter pertains to the Android operating system (OS) acquired by Google in 2005.
  • The CCI examined various practices of Google with respect to its licensing and various proprietary mobile applications, including Play Store, Google Search, Google Chrome, YouTube, etc.
  • During the inquiry, Google argued about the “competitive constraints being faced from Apple” in terms of the respective OS ecosystems.
  • The CCI noted that Apple’s business was primarily based on a vertically integrated smart device ecosystem that focused on sale of highend smart devices.
  • “Whereas Google’s business was found to be driven by the ultimate intent of increasing users on its platforms so that they interact with its revenue earning service i.e., online search which directly affects sale of online advertising services by Google,” the CCI said in a statement.

PM launches new mission to combat climate change “Mission LiFE (Life style For Environment)”

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the presence of U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres, launched ‘Mission LiFE’ (Lifestyle For Environment), a new initiative for sustainable and healthy lifestyle at the Statue of Unity in Gujarat.
  • Listing climate change and global warming as the main challenges before the world, the Prime Minister underlined that Mission LiFE makes the fight against climate change democratic with the contribution of everyone in their own capacity.
  • The launch of Mission LiFE in Gujarat is important as it was the first State to initiate measures in the direction of renewable energy and climate protection,”

 

Doctors ask Health Minister to Withdraw new AIIMS rules for treating MPs that promote ‘VIP culture’

  • The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has demanded immediate withdrawal of the new set of standard operating procedures (SOP) issued by M. Srinivas, Director, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, aimed at streamlining treatment arrangements for sitting MPs at the outpatient department, emergency consultation, and for inpatient hospitalisation.

Karnataka to promulgate ordinance for increasing reservation for SCs, STs

  • The Karnataka government has decided to promulgate an ordinance for increasing reservation for Scheduled Castes (SCs) from 15% to 17%, and for Scheduled Tribes (STs) from 3% to 7%.

 

DefExpo 2022 breaks previous record in terms of business

  • 53 in ₹ lakh crore, the worth of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements signed during the Defence Expo (DefExpo) at Gandhinagar, according to a senior official.

Army increasing surveillance along the LAC with China

  • 1000 The number of Surveillance copters procured by the Indian Army along with 80 mini remotely piloted aircraft systems, to bolster its surveillance apparatus along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, according to officials.
  • They stated that the current situation along the borders warrants seamless surveillance.
