National Antyodaya Divas – 25 September

  • Antyodaya Diwas is celebrated annually on 25th September in India.
  • It marks the birth anniversary of Indian leader Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya and is celebrated in his honour to remember his life

About the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya:

  • Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya was born on 25th September 1916 in the Chandrabhan village near the Fareh town in Mathura,
  • When he was just eight years old both of his parents passed away and he was raised by his maternal uncle.
  • Then by the 1940s, he got big in RSS he also met the founder KB Hedgewar and underwent a 40-day camp in Sangh education and the second year of training in the RSS education wing.
  • Then he got indulged in spreading the ideology of Hindutva nationalism across the country.
  • Because of all this progress, he co-founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh party in 1951 which was the predecessor of the Bhartiya Janta Party.
  • Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya died at the age of 51. As he was mysteriously found dead while travelling at Mughal Sarai in Uttar Pradesh on 11th February 1968. But his legacy still lives today among the people as we celebrate Antyodaya Diwas.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar inaugurated Lok Manthan programme

  • vice President of India inaugurated the third edition of the Lok Manthan program at the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati
  • The event will be facilitated by theChief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sharma.
  • This year’s theme for the Lok Manthan is Lokparampara (Lok Traditions)

REC Ltd  company has been given the ‘Maharatna’ company status

  • REC Ltd becomes 12th company to gets ‘Maharatna’ company status
  • Power sector-focussed non-banking finance company (NBFC) REC Ltd. has been accorded the status of a ‘Maharatna’ Central Public Sector Enterprise.

About Maharatna Status

  • The Maharatna dispensation was ushered in by the Union government for mega Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) to become global giants (introduced in 2010).
  • CPSEs are those companies in which the direct holding of the Central Government or other CPSEs is 51% or more.
  • “Maharatna” status is granted to a company which has recorded more than Rs. 5,000 crore of net profit for three consecutive years, an average annual turnover of Rs. 25,000 crore for three years or should have an average annual net worth of Rs. 15,000 crore for three years. It should also have global operations or footprints.
  • A CPSE should also have a Navratna status, be listed on an Indian stock exchange. The Government has laid down criteria for grant of Maharatna, Navratna and Miniratna status to CPSEs.

Indian author and poet ‘Meena Kandasamy’ has been announced as this year’s recipient of the Hermann Kesten Prize

  • Hermann Kesten Prize given by the PEN Centre in Germany’s Darmstadt.

About Meena Kandasamy

  • Meena Kandasamy was born in 1984 in Chennai, Kandasamy is a feminist and anti-caste activist whose work revolves around the issue of gender, caste, sexuality, patriarchy, and oppression by the Brahmanical system.
  • Her novels have been shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction, the International Dylan Thomas Prize, the Jhalak Prize and the Hindu Lit Prize. She previously held an editorial role at the English-language magazine ‘The Dalit’. Kandasamy has been a vocal critic of the arrest of fellow writers like Varavara Rao and former Delhi University professor G N Saibaba.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) terminated the licence of Laxmi Co-operative Bank

  • RBI terminated the licence of Maharashtra’s Solapur based Laxmi Co-operative Bank citing inadequate capital and earning prospects in September 2022

 About Laxmi Co-operative Bank Limited 

  • The DICGChas already paid Rs 193.68 crore of the total insured deposits on 13th September 2022.
  • The Laxmi Co-operative Bankceases to carry on banking business, with effect from the close of business.
  • The Laxmi Co-operative Bank Limited has failed to comply with the requirements of theBanking Regulation Act 1949.
  • After the cancellation of its license, Laxmi Co-operative Bank Limited is prohibited from conducting the business of banking, which includes acceptance of deposits and repayment of deposits, and others.
  • The Commissioner for Corporation and Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Maharashtra has also been requested to issue an order for winding up the bank and appoint a liquidator for the bank.
  • On liquidation, every depositor will be entitled to receive a deposit insurance claim amount of his/her deposits up to Rs 5 lakh from DICGC.

 India’s first dugong conservation reserve notified in Tamil Nadu

  • Tamil Nadu on Wednesday notified the country’s first ‘Dugong Conservation Reserve’ in Palk Bay
  • It covering the coastal waters of Thanjavur and Pudukottai districts with an area of 448 square kilometers.

 About  Dugong :

  • Dugong (Dugong dugon) also called ‘Sea Cow’ is one of the four surviving species in the Order Sirenia and it is the only existing species of herbivorous mammal that lives exclusively in the sea including in India.
  • Dugongs are an important part of the marine ecosystem and their depletion will have effects all the way up the food chain.
  • Distribution and Habitat: They are found in over 30 countries and in India are seen in the Gulf of Mannar, Gulf of Kutch, Palk Bay, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Conservation Status:

  • IUCN Red List status: Vulnerable
  • Wild (Life) Protection Act, 1972: Schedule I
  • CITES: Appendix I

India wins UN award for its initiative to control and prevent hypertension under National Health Mission

  • ‘India Hypertension Control Initiative (IHCI)’, a large-scale hypertension intervention under the National Health Mission (NHM).
  • The initiative was launched in 2017 and gradually increased to cover more than 130 districts across 23 states.
  • IHCI aims to accelerate progress toward the NCD target by supplementing and intensifying evidence­based strategies to strengthen the building blocks of hypertension management and control

Uttar Pradesh Legislature reserves a women-only day today

  • Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly is all set to have a day reserved for women legislators to speak and raise women-centric issues in the House.
  • Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly has 403 members.
  • The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath wrote a letter to all women legislatures and told them about initiatives taken by Government under Mission Shakti Scheme which is a historic moment.
  • Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath also informed that the session at the country’s largest legislature would set an example.
