BJP sweeps Gujarat, Cong. wrests Himachal

  • Bharatiya Janata Party has won the biggest majority by any party ever at elections in Gujarat
  • The Congress has suffered its worst-ever defeat in Gujarat but wrested power from the BJP in Himachal Pradesh
  • AAP managed to win five seats in the 182-member Gujarat assembly and drew a blank in Himachal
  • In roaring Gujarat victory, the BJP has retained power in Gujarat for a record seventh straight term as it claimed victory on 156 seats in 182-member state assembly.
  • Congress wrested Himachal Pradesh from the BJP winning 40 seats in the 68-member Assembly in the hill state which maintained its tradition of not voting any incumbent government to power since 1985
  • According to the results declared by the Election Commission, the BJP won 25 seats, while eight state ministers including Suresh Bhardwaj, Ram Lal Markanda and Surveen Chaudhary lost.
  • The Independents won from three constituencies and the Aam Aadmi Party, which had contested from 67 seats, failed to open its account.

 

AAP wrests power from BJP, wins 134 wards of 250 wards in Delhi MCD election.

  • The Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections .
  • Aam Aadmi Party won the municipal elections, bagging 134 of 250 wards. It had bagged 48 out of 272 seats in 2017.
  • The BJP won 104 wards. Its tally was 181 in 2017.
  • Congress won only nine municipal wards from 31 won by the party in 2017 civic body polls.
  • All the three independent candidates who have won are women
  • The vote share of AAP in Delhi also soared from 21.09 per cent to 42.05 per cent while Congress’ vote share reduced to 11.68 per cent from 21.09 per cent in 2017 civic body elections
  • Only transgender candidate in MCD elections, Bobi, won Sultanpuri-A ward. Bobi contested election on AAP’s ticket

 

Thousands of cases pending in Supreme Court, says Centre

  • 11,000The number of “matters” pending before the Supreme Court for over 10 years, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju informed the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
  • In the 25 High Courts, 8.77 lakh civil and 3.74 lakh criminal cases are pending for more than 10 years, he said citing data from the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG).

 

Dimple Yadav wins Mainpuri bypoll with a huge vote margin

  • 8 In lakh, the margin of votes by which Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate Dimple Yadav won the Mainpuri parliamentary bypoll, defeating her nearest Bharatiya janata Party (BJP) rival, Raghuraj Singh Shakya.
  • Considered as SP’s bastion, the seat was held by party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav and it got vacated after his death on October 10.

 

 

AAP to turn national party

With 12.9%, AAP enters Gujarat Assembly and becomes a national party.

 

National party status in India

  • A registered party can be recognized as a National Party only if it satisfies the following criteria according to the Election Commission of India:
  1. The party secures 2 percent seats in the Lok Sabha from at least 3 different states.
  2. A party secures 6% of the votes in the General Election to Lok Sabha or Legislative Assembly in four states and wins 4 Lok Sabha seats from any state or states.
  3. A party is recognized as a state party in four or more states
  •  At present, there are Nine national political parties in India. They are;
  1. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
  2. Communist Party of India
  3. Communist Party of India (Marxist)
  4. Indian National Congress (INC)
  5. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)
  6. National People’s Party
  7. All India Trinamool Congress
  8. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)
  9. Aam Admi Party (AAP)
